KARASAHR

Sean and the others sighed collectively in relief as he placed his foot back down on the next tile ahead.

“I guess it was nothing,” he said. “False alarm.”

Tommy had been holding his breath for several seconds when he exhaled. “Don’t. Do. That. Okay?”

“Do what? Our jobs? We have to get in there.”

“Just…be more careful. I don’t want to set off some thousand-year-old booby trap.”

Sean didn’t say anything else as he continued through the archway and into a round, domed chamber. He checked to his right and left, wary that there could be something else waiting on either side to cut him down or smash him into the floor.

He started at the sight of two statues, one on either side of the entrance.

“What? What is it?” Adriana asked, stepping forward with her gun in hand, the attached light swinging the bright beam around to illuminate the statue on the left.

“Just a couple of statues,” Sean said.

Tommy and Daiyu joined them and stared in wonder at the two figures. Facing the archway, a statue of a woman in unusual armor guarded the door. She held a short sword in one hand. The blade looked similar to a gladius. In the other hand, she held an astonishingly intricate rose.

To the right, a man stood guard in similar armor. The helmet was rounded, somewhat like those the Spartan soldiers wore thousands of years before, but without the plume on top.

It was unlike any armor the group had ever seen—sleek, curved, and smooth. And the figures wore boots instead of the sandals that so many other ancient warriors strapped to their feet.

“Who are they?” Adriana wondered.

“Guardians,” Tommy guessed. “But what are they guarding?”

Sean had turned away from the statues, letting the flashlight play along the rounded wall. A story played out in front of his eyes in vivid colors. The walls and ceiling were covered in images of people wearing strange garments, clothing that may well have fit with some futuristic science fiction story. The tunics were long, with strips dangling from each side. They wore trousers that clung to their legs, and boots similar to the ones on the warriors guarding the room.

Images of grand cities and children playing in fields dotted the wallscape. The faces, foreign yet familiar, all wore a satisfied, almost grateful look. They were at peace with everything and everyone.

On the backside of the room, all the paintings merged to a single focal point where mountains stood on either side and sloped down into a valley where a grand palace sat in the basin. A gate stood between two pillars, blocking the way into the palace. The image of a red heart occupied the center of the gate.

“This is incredible,” Tommy muttered. “I never get tired of finding this stuff.”

“Me either,” Sean admitted.

Daiyu’s eyes wandered the wall until she found something dark in the middle of the room.

She pointed her flashlight at it and gasped.

A stone cube stood atop two steps that encircled it in the shape of a square. On top of the cube sat a metal ring, held in place by four prongs.
